Suffolk Latches are amongst the first type of door latch used in the Colonies. Basically an iron adaption of very early wooden bar latches, they are very simple and durable. Sold as a set, these latches include the handle and thumb lever, latch bar, staple and catch. They come in two sizes, 5 inch for small cabinets, and 8 inch which is the most adaptable to both doors as well as cabinets. We sell them with either Bean or Spear cusps. In addition, there are two types of latch bars; Empire which has a tapered shape, and is seen in England, and its colonies, and Yankee which matches the simpler straight bars favored by early New England settlers. With the Yankee sets we also include two types of catches, the normal driven and screwed catch, and a flat catch. We find the flat catch allows the latch set to be installed in alternative ways.
